Diagnostic Investigations
We utilise evidence-based diagnostic investigations to rule out underlying medical conditions, support accurate psychiatric assessment, and ensure safe treatment planning.
The Medical Basis of Mental Health
Mental health conditions can sometimes be caused or exacerbated by underlying physical illnesses, such as thyroid dysfunction, vitamin deficiencies, or neurological issues.
To ensure a truly comprehensive approach, Dr Rajcoomar may recommend specific medical investigations as part of your assessment to ensure that all potential biological factors are identified and addressed.
Common Investigations
The need for investigations is highly individualised and based on your clinical presentation and medical history.
- Blood tests (e.g., full blood count, thyroid function, vitamin levels)
- Metabolic screening (especially prior to starting certain medications)
- Urine drug screening
- Referrals for neuroimaging (CT or MRI brain scans) if neurologically indicated
- ECG (electrocardiogram) for cardiac monitoring with specific medications
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to do blood tests to see a psychiatrist?
Not always. Blood tests are only requested when clinically indicated based on your symptoms, medical history, or the specific medications being considered.
Where do I go for these investigations?
We will provide you with a referral letter. You can take this to a private pathology laboratory (like Ampath or Lancet) or radiology practice of your choice, many of which are located near our practice.
How are the results discussed?
Once we receive your results, we will contact you. Normal results may be discussed briefly over the phone, while complex or abnormal results will be reviewed in detail during your next follow-up appointment.
